STEMReach Mamfe is one of the most defining chapters in the journey of Data Girl Technologies, a leading force in STEM education, women in tech, and empowering women in STEM in Cameroon. Mamfe tells a story of resistance, resilience, and transformation in a community deeply affected by the ongoing Anglophone crisis in the English-speaking regions of Cameroon.

For Data Girl Technologies, STEMReach Mamfe was not just about tech training, it was about meeting women and girls at their point of need and helping them rewrite stories that would change their lives forever.

Understanding the Mamfe Context, Crisis, Agriculture, and Survival

Mamfe is a small town located in the South West Region of Cameroon, known for its rich agricultural output, especially cocoa farming. The town has also been significantly impacted by socio-political instability, which has disrupted education, livelihoods, and access to opportunity.

When the STEMReach project arrived in Mamfe, the reality on ground was clear. Most women were more focused on surviving through farming activities, particularly cocoa cultivation. Being present on their farms was a priority over attending any form of training, even one centered on STEM education or women in tech.

At the first call for participants, attendance was very low. Many women simply did not show up.

From Resistance to Strategy, Rethinking Impact in Mamfe

Rather than seeing the low turnout as a failure, Data Girl Technologies, known as one of the best tech training institutes in Cameroon, made a strategic decision to adapt. As a goal-oriented and highly dynamic organization, the team recognized that impact in Mamfe required a different entry point.

The turning point came when the Public Relations lead proposed a shift in focus toward secondary school students, particularly girls registered for computer science ahead of the national examinations.

This pivot changed everything.

Girls in Tech, From Zero Knowledge to Writing Their First Code

At the time of our intervention, many students in Mamfe who had registered for computer science had little to no understanding of computers. Some did not know how to turn a computer on or off. Others had never interacted with a laptop before.

Through the STEMReach Mamfe program, Data Girl Technologies took these students through structured tech training, starting from digital literacy to foundational programming concepts. Step by step, these girls learned how to use a computer, understand basic logic, and write their very first lines of code.

Within a few months, and close to their national exams, these girls were transformed.

Every student who participated in the program passed their computer science examinations.

This is the power of STEM education when it is delivered with intention, empathy, and excellence.

One Girl, One Laptop, Making STEM Education Accessible

At Data Girl Technologies, we believe that every girl in Cameroon deserves a laptop. One girl, one laptop. Through our mobile labs, we were able to bring resources directly to students who otherwise would never have had access to such tools.

Without this intervention, many of these girls might have failed their exams and internalized the belief that their dreams were not valid. Through STEMReach Mamfe, we sent a clear message: dreams are valid, girls in tech belong, and women deserve equal opportunities as men.

Empowering Women in STEM Beyond the Classroom

While the first phase of STEMReach Mamfe has come to an end, the vision of Data Girl Technologies lives on through the stories, successes, and wins of every girl who walked through our doors.

Our approach to empowering women in tech goes beyond technical skills. We intentionally create space for conversations, mentorship, and problem-solving through capstone projects. These conversations help young people dream boldly, imagine solutions, and see themselves as innovators and leaders.

This is how women in STEM are nurtured, not just trained, but believed in.

The Future of STEMReach, An Open Invitation

As 2026 unfolds, our doors remain open. Data Girl Technologies envisions a future where every girl, regardless of household, religion, community, or tribe, experiences what it means to become.

Talents are being born every day through our programs, and we are inviting partners, donors, and allies to come onboard.

Mamfe closed the doors on the first phase of the STEMReach project, but there are many more communities we can reach if resources are made available.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Women Win and the Free STEM Fund for believing in this vision and giving STEMReach a chance.
